Public Service Announcement!

There is a big, bad stomach bug traveling around the DC area (and beyond, I'm sure). I've seen it first hand because my poor hubby has been sick for the last 24 hours. Beyond that, I've seen LOTS of Facebook status updates with news of the virus.

For the sake of yourself and those around you, keep your hands washed! If you don't have access to soap and water throughout the day, please buy a travel size bottle of hand sanitizer and keep it close to you. We touch so many surfaces throughout the day and it is so important to keep yourself safe and healthy.

In talking about staying healthy and keeping those around you from getting sick, I've done some basic research on other ways to protect yourself during cold and flu season. This information might be redundant to some of you but the bottom line is - I DON'T WANT TO GET SICK!

1. If you are ill, stay home. As important as you are in your job, no one is indispensable and you won’t perform at an adequate level anyway. So stay home and…

2. REST. As much as you can, rest. This applies to you when you are healthy, as well. Sleep is your body’s way of repairing itself, and if you don’t allow your body to relax and rejuvenate, you will burn out and then your body has no defenses to fight off germs.

3. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. If you fill your body with junk food, you aren’t getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs to be able to resist infection. Pay special attention to Vitamin C and Vitamin B. Vitamin C is a great immune booster, and Vitamin B helps your body fight stress.

4. Drink plenty of water. Staying well hydrated keeps the tissues of the respiratory system moist and helps the immune system work properly.

5. Wash your hands often, and thoroughly. Your hands are only one very small way that germs enter your immune system, but they are often a trigger for many people, who touch their mouths and noses multiple times in one day.
